Tech Stack Recipe for Running a Trendsetting Restaurant or Bar
What does the front of house (FOH) tech stack typically look like in a restaurant or bar?
Let's dive in! There are three key tech platforms you should integrate for a successful implementation of technology within the space to enhance your client experience:
1. Restaurant Management and POS Systems
A reliable POS system to manage transactions, track sales, and handle orders can really streamline your front of the house (FOH) operations and customer experience, while syncing with the back of the house (BOH) . The beauty of platforms like TouchBistro, Silverware, Lightspeed, Restaurant365 and Toast is that their POS ecosystem has developed over the years to handle: reporting and analytics, Tableside order management, Kitchen display systems, Self-Serve Kiosk, CRM & Loyalty and Employee Management. They each have their own unique strengths, TouchBistro, Silverware and Lightspeed are Canadian market leaders building out an international presence with TouchBistro and Silverware primarily focus on the restaurant industry, with a strong emphasis on serving cafes, bars, and full-service restaurants. Toast and Restaurant365 have a large share and presence in the American market with a broader focus on franchise and multi-location foodservice establishments.

2. Inventory Management
Inventory management in restaurants can often be overlooked, especially by new restaurateurs venturing into building their space. Many of the pain points associated with inventory management are addressed by the restaurant management platforms discussed above.I believe it is crucial to select a vendor from the above list that either integrates with third-party inventory management platforms or offers their own solution within their offering.
Firstly, such integration helps control costs by preventing overstocking or understocking of ingredients, reducing waste, and ensuring optimal resource utilization. Secondly, efficient inventory management contributes to maintaining consistent menu offerings and preventing stockouts. Lastly, it facilitates accurate financial tracking, providing insights into profitability, identifying trends, and aiding in strategic decision-making for the long-term success of the restaurant.
All of the restaurant management platforms have integration partners to manage inventory:
Toast has several integration partners like getbeyond, wisk and more, similar to Restaurant365
Silverware has integrations with wisk, MarketMan and more, similar to TouchBistro
3. Network, Audio-Visual (AV) Systems and Security
Network Infrastructure
A reliable network is essential for restaurants and bars to ensure the smooth operation of POS systems, online ordering platforms, and reservation systems. It facilitates efficient communication between front-of-house and back-of-house operations, reducing order processing times and enhancing customer service. Moreover, to minimize any potential downtime, I highly recommend implementing an LTE-5G backup internet service either through your ISP provider, Teltonika, or satellite-based internet backup services such as Starlink. This backup ensures that even if your local ISP experiences downtime, you can continue operations until regular service is restored. In my experience over the years, this is the most overlooked aspect I come across among some of the most successful restaurateurs in Canada.
“In the fast-paced world of hospitality, a robust network isn't just a luxury—it's the backbone of seamless operations. From speedy POS transactions to streamlined reservations, it's the silent hero ensuring every guest experience is nothing short of extraordinary.”
AV Systems
AV systems play a pivotal role in creating the desired ambiance and atmosphere within restaurants and bars. Background music, lighting, sound damping and so forth all contribute to the overall customer experience, helping establishments tailor their environment to specific themes or events. These solutions vary based on the space and purpose, I recommend getting in touch with your local AV and Automation Integrators. A few common platform that we would recommend are Control4 for one-app control for all things security and entertainment, Lutron lighting and shading solutions, and audio solutions through Kramer, QSC, Sonos, K-array or Sonance
Security
Surveillance cameras and Security systems act as deterrents to theft and provide evidence in case of incidents. More importantly, in a bar or restaurant environment it protects both the patrons and your employees on a situational basis where an incident escalates resulting in a lawsuit, charges pressed or property damage. Some of the common platforms I’ve seen or implemented in the recent years have been alarm.com, Axis communications, Ubiquiti and many more.
"Transforming spaces into unforgettable experiences, AV systems are the silent architects of ambiance in restaurants and bars. From harmonious background melodies to captivating lighting, every element intertwines to craft a unique atmosphere.”
If you or your friend ever decide to dive into the world of building a bar or restaurant empire, consider taking a deep dive into your tech setup during the design phase. It's a smart move that can set you up for a successful launch and long-lasting brand reputation. Of course, let's not forget the obvious: great food and overall experience are non-negotiable. But integrating the right tech tools can add that extra gear to your operation. It's like adding the secret ingredient that elevates the entire recipe for success.
