4 ways to prevent porch pirates from stealing your gifts this holiday season

Never have another package stolen again from your porch? Holiday season means dozens of deliveries to your home, and while you might not be there all the time to receive your packages, how can you still avoid porch theft?

As online shopping increases this time of year, so do deliveries, and unfortunately, many of those delivered packages sit unattended for hours on people's front porches, attracting thieves. A recent study found that 43% of respondents reported having a package stolen, up from 36% just one year earlier. And of those who have had a package stolen, more than half have had it happen more than once. So what can smart automation do for you, to avoid becoming the victim of porch pirates?

1. Install a doorbell camera

Smart doorbells with built-in security cameras can capture porch pirates in the act, often with clear enough video quality to identify the perpetrator. Unfortunately, even with these added security measures, people have still experienced theft by porch pirates on camera while they are out of the house. We suggest purchasing a doorbell with a microphone for the added function of being able to speak with someone who is approaching your doorstep. Tell a delivery person where to conceal a package or scare off a potential thief by telling them they’ve been recorded and authorities are on their way. Overall, a video doorbell provides the peace of mind that a traditional doorbell simply can’t offer.

2. Cameras and floodlights

To extend security beyond your front door, Consumer Reports said to consider a camera system around your home, typically using four to five wireless or hard-wired cameras.

Another great option is floodlight cameras. They are really just floodlights that double as security cameras. One nice thing about floodlights is, on most homes, they’re already in spots that are ideal spaces for cameras, such as over your garage door. They are hardwired for power, so you don't have to worry about recharging a battery.

3. Remote Access

Having constant access to your home’s surroundings is key to preventing thieves. Research shows that the longer you’re away, the higher the crime risk. We use Alarm.com and Control4 home security applications to allow users access to their home’s interior and external areas.

Remote access will serve you far beyond mitigating porch piracy. With an inside look into your home, you can also monitor your family’s whereabouts and make sure your lights are off, doors or closed, or whatever other information that would ease your mind when you’re away.

4. Ask thy neighbor

Last but not least, in the spirit of the holidays and  'better to have a good neighbor than a distant friend', ask a neighbour to pick up your package if you get a delivery alert. Even having a camera, this helps knowing your neighbour safely picked up your package so your family and friends will not leave your party empty handed!
